Meat thieves striking area supermarkets

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - A recent string of meat thefts is being investigated by the Madison County Sheriff's Office, officials announced.

According to authorities, men are seen entering area Tops Supermarkets, proceeding to the meat section, taking several packages and leaving. A man has been placing the packages of meat under his outer garment -- in one case a jacket, in another a sweatshirt -- and leaving without paying.

Two incidents have taken place at the Tops Supermarket on Route 5 in Canastota on March 10 and March 25, and two incidents at the Tops Supermarket on Route 5 in Sherrill on March 24 and March 25. Officials say the man involved in the March 25 thefts at both stores is the same man.

Authorities say the value of the meat taken in each instance is several hundred dollars.

Anyone who has information on or recognizes the men is asked to call Madison County Sheriff's Deputies at 366-2311 or the City of Sherrill Police Department at 363-3200. All tips will remain confidential.
