Memorial Day events going on throughout the area
Saturday, May 26
9 am - R. Kirk Parkhurst Post 1448 in Oriskany will conduct a brief service in the Oriskany cemetery on Cider Street.
10 am - The Village of Oriskany's Memorial Day services are combined with Oriskany High School, held at the school auditorium on Utica Street.
Sunday, May 27
10 am - Members of the Walter Skiba Post 20 American Legion will be at Sunday Mass at Holy Trinity Church on Lincoln Ave.
11 am - A Memorial Day Ceremony at American Legion Baldwin Branck Post 845 in Frankfort. Proceeding from the WWI Doughboy monument across from the Town Hall to pay tribute to all veterans of all wars.
1 pm - VFW John A. LaPolla Post 8728 assisting in a memorial service at the West Schuyler Firehouse at 120 Newport Road, honoring veterans from WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
1 pm - The Munnsville American Legion Post 54 will hold their annual Memorial Day parade. The parade leads off from the Ferris Industries / Briggs & Stratton parking lot, travels south down Route 46 and ends at the corner of Valley Mills / WIlliams Road.
1:30 pm - Special services will be held at St. Stanislaus Cemetery on Woods Road in Whitesboro, including a wreath-laying at the Veterans' Monument.
2 pm - A memorial service featuring the Deerfield Schuyler Cemetery Association and the VFW John A. LaPolla 8728 membership will be held at the Deerfield Schuyler Cemetery located at 1414 Herkimer Road in North Utica, honoring the many veterans that are buried there.
Monday, May 28
9 am - Vernon Center's parade begins in front of the Vernon Center Volunteer Fire Department and concludes at the Vernon Center Cemetery, where a program will take place.
9:30 am - Whitesboro's Memorial Day parade begins, followed by a brick-laying ceremony and memorial service at the Village Green and the Whitestown American Legion.
10 am - A mass will be held at Holy Trinity Cemetery - Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum on Champlin Ave in Yorkville. Members of local veterans groups will participate in graveside prayer services after the mass.
10 am - Kuyahoora Valley Memorial Day parade in Cold Brook
10:30 am - American Legion Post 161 in Holland Patent hosting a parade that starts in the parking lot of the Holland Patent Middle School. Parade proceeds to Elm Street, to State Route 365, and west to the Village Honor Roll for a wreath-laying ceremony. Refreshments will be served at the Post following the ceremony.
11 am - Wreath Laying ceremony starts at the Soldiers and Sailor Monument on Oneida Square. The wreath-laying then moves to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Memorial Parkway, the POW-MIA Monument on the Parkway, the WWI / WWII / Korean War Monument on the Parkway, the Purple Heart Park in West Utica and the All Veterans Memorial at Utica's Main Post Office on Pitcher Street.
1 pm - The Village of Yorkville will conduct its services at the Yorkville Memorial Park on West Whitesboro Street. Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi will be the speaker.
2 pm - Utica's Memorial Day Parade proceeds up Genesee Street from Oneida Square to the Memorial Parkway.
4 pm - The Ilion Elks Lodge 1444 will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at the lodge, located at 8 West Street. Service members from Herkimer County who were killed in action, died of wounds, missing in action or died as a prisoner of war will be honored. A flag will be raised and lowered by the Frankfort VFW 502 and a reading of the names of fallen veterans, a prayer and moment of silence. There will be a 21 gun salute and "Taps" will be performed as the flag is returned to full mast. A picnic with patriotic songs conclude the events.
7 pm - New Hartford's parade begins at the New Hartford Shopping Center, proceeds north on Genesee Street, turning right onto Pearl Street, left onto Sanger Ave and left onto Oxford Road, ending at the New Hartford Volunteer Fire Department, where a memorial service will be held along with an open house.
