Miss China contestants tour area attractions

(WKTV) - More than a dozen pageant contestants are getting a taste for Upstate New York as the Miss China pageant is now partnering with the I Love New York campaign.

On Thursday, the group made a stop at the Herkimer Diamond Mines and Gems Along the Mohawk. The pageant is for any Chinese girl, American or non-American, to get into the acting and modeling industry. The tour helps the contestants learn about the state and themselves as individuals.

"The reason is they are from New York. They are from the U.S.," said Johnny Deng, a pageant official. Deng says the winner of the pageant automatically gets contracts with one of the biggest TV industries in Hong Kong.

On Wednesday, the group toured Turning Stone Resort. Local tourism promoters helped plan out the stops.
