More than 700 kids get bikes at "Build a Bike Giveaway"

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - They started lining up around the Utica Memorial Auditorium Saturday morning at 5:15, even though the doors didn't open until 10:00.

The 2013 Build a Bike Giveaway has been well publicized and it showed.

Event Coordinator Dave Buck says each year the number of bikes needed has grown. He said, "People just don't have that money and when they have four and five kids, where they going to find it?"

More than 700 bikes were on the floor of the Aud, all collected since the day after last year's giveaway.

Tiffany Young of Utica brought her three children.

One daughter has a bike, so that daughter was only there to get a helmet, but her other two daughters were very excited to receive a bike. She said, "Kids don't get much these days, with the economy and everything, it's good that they're doing something nice for the kids you know."

Seven year old Elyssa Pula of Utica was anticipating what kind of bike she wanted while waiting in line for almost two hours before getting inside.

She said she wanted a pink bike, but also had other criteria, saying "it has no training wheels...and and it goes fast....and it's beautiful."

If you would like to donate a bike for next year's event, just give Utica Safe Schools/Healthy Students a call at (315) 792-2205.
