Mt. Markham football volunteer arrested on rape charges

MT. MARKHAM, N.Y. (WKTV) - A volunteer affiliated with the Mt. Markham High School football team has been arrested by New York State Police after allegations that he raped somebody.

According to the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center, 24-year-old Fritz M. Barrett is facing charges of rape and endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities say Barrett is an assistant coach with the team, something school officials are disputing.

Mt. Markham School Superintendent Casey Barduhn spoke with NEWSChannel 2 Wednesday night. Barduhn made it clear that Barrett is volunteer with the football program and is not listed as an assistant coach.

Barduhn said, "We became aware of the situation late this afternoon through New York State Police. We were shocked to hear the news. Barrett is no longer a part of our program or has any access to the school. We have not been informed that the school is part of the investigation, but if at any point we are, we will cooperate to the fullest extent with authorities."

Barrett was arraigned in the Town of Bridgewater and sent to the Oneida County Jail.

Anyone with information concerning this investigation or other potential victims is asked to call the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center at 732-3990.

The victim has been offered services through the Oneida County CAC.
