NH Animal Hospital collecting pet items for flood victims

By NEWSChannel 2 Staff

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Stagnant water brings with it a host of health problems, not just for people, but for pets.

While we can't stop pets and wild animals from foraging for spoiled food or drinking bacteria infected water, Dr. Frank Mondi of the New Hartford Animal Hospital says that means we can expect to see more hookworm, roundworm and other infections.

The larger concern is that those infections can be passed to humans.

In order to keep your pets in optimal health, the New Hartford Animal Hospital is stepping in to help.

"We're expecting that once people collect themselves and get over the initial acute problems, that they'll be looking for help in terms of themselves, their families and their pets," Dr. Mondi said.

The New Hartford Animal Hospital will be collecting pet items to distribute to families with pets in need following the floods. Anything that's not distributed will be given to the local animal shelters.

Some of the items being collected are dog and cat food, bowls, kitty litter and leashes.

If you can give any of these items, you are asked to call the New Hartford Animal Hospital at 315-737-7387.
