Utica City School district braces for severe cuts in 2014-2015 budget

The Utica City School District announced its 2014-2015 preliminary budget during its meeting Tuesday night.

The 2014-2015 budget is $145.9 Million. It is a 5 percent increase from the 2013-2014 budget. The budge reflects a 1.25 percent tax rate increase.

District officials say that 93 positions will be cut district wide and about 50 of them are teacher positions. District Superintendent Bruce Karam says the budget increase is due to the loss of state aid

"We have a lot of high needs students," said Karam. "It's a very high poverty, low wealth school district, therefore we are very state aid dependent."
