New Hartford CPA sentenced in federal court for preparing false returns

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A New Hartford Accountant has been sentenced in federal court for preparing false tax returns.

According to the United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York, Steven Turynowicz, 46, of New Hartford, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) engaged in the business of preparing tax returns, was sentenced to three years probation, a $5,000 fine, and 120 hours of community service in Federal Court in Syracuse for preparing and presenting false tax returns to the IRS.

Authorities said that specifically, Turynowicz was responsible for preparing at least 13 fraudulent tax returns for the years 2006 and 2007 for a total tax loss of $62,804.

This prosecution resulted from an investigation conducted by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigations, Syracuse, New York. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ransom P. Reynolds.
