New Hartford Police seek answers in fatal accident at Consumer Square

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The New Hartford Police Department are looking for answers after a man was killed in an accident in Consumer Square Saturday afternoon.

According to Police, Melvin Wood, 73, was driving his sedan in the parking lot, when he collided with a guide rail post.

Patrons of the shopping center immediately went to check on Wood, when he was found to be unresponsive.

Patrons then began to administer C.P.R., before New Hartford Police and New York Mills Fire Department crews arrived on the scene shortly after 4 p.m. to continue treatment.

Wood was transported to St. Luke's Hospital, and was pronounced dead shortly after.

Initial reports from the investigation indicate that Wood, an employee of the Walmart Super Center in the plaza, had just left the store after his work shift, when he was struck with an undisclosed medical event that caused him to crash into the guide rail post.

Also on scene were crews from Edwards Ambulance Service and the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office.

The accident is currently under investigation, and the Police are asking any witnesses with potential information on the crash to contact them at 733-6666.
