New U.S. stamp features a little bit of Utica

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Starting Thursday, a little bit of Utica will be on letters and packages headed all over the world.

A U.S. stamp released Thursday features "Sunset," a painting by artist Frederic Church. The painting is part of the permanent collection at Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute.

Stamp collectors showed up for the first sale at the museum Thursday morning, as it's a thrilling time for them -- and the museum.

"It was exhibited here in Utica in the 1870s, and then purchased by Helen Munson -- as you can imagine one of our namesakes of our institution -- and she purchased it from an exhibition here in Utica in the 1870s," said Anna D. Ambrosio, director and chief curator of MWPAI. "It has been here in Utica ever since, and now we're sharing it with a national audience."

Church was an American landscape painter who was born in Hartford, Conn.
