New breeder and pet store bill signed into law

(WKTV) - Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law, Friday, a new bill regulating animal breeders and pet stores.

The law will allow local governments to regulate commercial breeders and stores, and crack down on puppy mills.

Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi said the new law will give local municipalities the power to protect animals.

"Putting this legislation into the books will allow local governments to adopt tougher laws to crack down on abusers, protect animals and prevent inhumane practices," he said. "By giving municipalities the ability to enact more stringent laws, they can better regulate pet dealers and breeders to ensure that profit isn't prioritized over the safety of the animals."
