New campaign urges people to take medication as directed

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Excellus announced a new campaign Wednesday advising people to "take as directed."

The American Heart Association says 125,000 Americans die yearly because of failing to take their medication properly. Doctors say sometimes people don't take their medication properly because they forget, they have trouble getting to the pharmacy or it's just too expensive.

According to Dr. Frank Dubeck, the program is designed to get people to realize the importance of taking medicine as directed and to work with their physicians to overcome obstacles that may prevent them from taking their medication.

Not taking medication properly can also lead to emergency room visits and additional doctor appointments -- costing the health care system nearly $300 billion yearly.
