New nursing program online and on campus at Utica College

By HILARY LANE

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Utica College's new nursing program has received the green light by the New York State Department of Education.

Beginning in January, the college will offer an accelerated second-degree program for the first time.

The 16-month course will be a hybrid, meaning the classes will be completed both onsite and online. Also, the participants will already have a college degree in another field.

"We are seeing a lot of folks with education degrees, business degrees, things that people went into something thinking this is what they are interested in and then quite honestly they weren't as interested or the opportunities aren't there," said Dr. Cathy Brownell, Chair and Associate Professor of Nursing at Utica College.

Twenty four students will be accepted to the nursing program in January 2013 and again in the spring.

The main idea is for participating local students to perform their clinical work at area hospitals to keep talent in the Mohawk Valley.
