New owners say West Rome Drive-in will open this summer

By WKTV News

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Since 1951 the two screens at the West Rome Drive-in have been entertaining movie goers of all ages. Thousands thought when it closed last summer-- it was the end of an era. But the new owners says it will open up again this summer.

Last summer the owners of the west rome drive-in, Zurich Cinema Corporation, decided to sell the property to the Davidson Auto Group. Now a year later, the new dealership celebrates it's Grand Opening. From the road though, there are hardly any signs that a drive-in will be up and running anytime soon. But the president of the company says a lot of the work is taking place behind the scenes. "We're very close. The new concession stand is up. It's wired. They are doing the plumbing as we speak. They just built today (Thursday) the new ticket booth. We put in 1000 feet of road back into the theater, that's all set to go," says Doug Davidson, President of the Davidson Auto Group.

Sometime over the next couple of weeks a screen will go up, ensuring the 15,000 people who drive past everyday that the drive-in is far from dead. "The date we're aiming at is July 1st. Hopefully we can move that up a bit, but we'll see how it goes," said Davidson. "It's an exciting complex. Between the dealership, the Collision Center and the theater. It's exciting, we're thrilled to death."

Davidson says a new electronic sign will be installed to let everyone know what movies are being featured. This will be the West Rome Drive-in's 61st season.
