No more stacked cages for cats at Stevens-Swan thanks to new room

By RACHEL MURPHY

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Stevens-Swan Humane Society has renovated a space for cats and kittens.

The Humane Society hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the renovation on Wednesday. Before the remodeling, nearly 130 cats were overcrowded and stuck inside cages. Now, the cats are free to roam around in a more adoption-friendly environment.

Jerry Kraus of Steven-Swan says he thinks the cats will have more interaction with potential adoptive families and other cats because of these rooms.

"Cats are actually walking onto the shelving and onto the ledges and they can sit on our customers' laps and they get to actually meet these cats," Kraus said. "{Potential adopters} get to be up close and personal {with the cats} and find out more about their personalities."

The Northern Safety and Industrial Company helped provide new windows, shelves, ventilation, and a fresh coat of paint for two existing rooms.

Pratt students at Munson-Williams-Proctor also did some decorating. The students painted murals inside and around the cat rooms.

The Northern Safety and Industrial Company donated $12,000 to make the project possible.
