No suspects yet in fatal Whitesboro Street shooting
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - There will still no suspects as of Thursday afternoon in the fatal shooting of a man on Whitesboro Street in the City of Utica.
The fatal shooting happened around 9:45 Wednesday night and when Utica Police answered a call for shots fired on Whitesboro Street, they had bottles hurled at them by a crowd of roughly 100 people.
44 year old John Spratt died at the scene in a West Utica doorway on Whitesboro Street, shot multiple times.
The scene was so volatile and violent when Utica Police arrived on scene that they had to call several other local police departments for back-up, including New York Mills, New York State Police and the Oneida County Sheriff's Department. That chaotic scene made crowd control the first priority, making it difficult to get to the bottom of what happened.
"It was really chaotic for us," said Sgt. Steve Hauck of UPD. "We did the best we could to secure the scene, to preserve evidence, but as far as being able to really sit and talk to people on the street, it was very difficult last night."
Records show that victim John Spratt was a convicted sex offender who served time in state prison for sex abuse, drug and weapon charges.
Utica Police are looking to the public for help. Authorities say with all those people in the area at the time of the murder, they believe someone must have seen something. If you did, they ask you to call them at 315-223-3510.
Police have not yet identified a suspect.
