Notre Dame students collect thousands of food items for less fortunate

(WKTV) - The student body at Notre Dame is in the spirit of giving, making a large donation to the less fortunate.

The students collected close to 3,000 food items this holiday season. Each student was asked to bring in three canned goods or nonperhisable food items.

School officials say they went above and beyond the call and on Monday morning, the bounty was loaded up and delivered to the historic Old St. John's Church in Utica.

"The kids always come through in a clinch," said Carla Nemecek, a Notre Dame teacher and campus minister. "They always come through and make it a successful project. We like to teach the students here that it's always good to give back to the community."

One family takes the cake, with a set of triplets collecting more than 600 items for the drive. The donations also include $1,500 in Price Chopper gift cards.
