Number's up: Central NY eyes new area code by '15

By Associated Press

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - The 315 will be getting some company.

The area code that covers 18 central New York counties and the city of Syracuse is nearing capacity and the state Public Service Commission is revisiting a plan to give the region two codes by 2015.

The PSC started exploring a new area code in 2007 based on predictions by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator. New calculations gave a longer life to the 315 code, which is now expected to be out of room in early 2015.

The plan calls for an "overlay" where new numbers get the new area code and existing numbers keep the 315. That means customers would have to dial 10 digits even for some local calls.

The public has until July 15 to comment on the proposal.
