OESJ students protest in halls over superintendent's leave

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Students of the newly merged Oppenheim Ephratah St. Johnsville School District had a sit-in protest Friday.

The students were protesting Superintendent Laura Lawrence was placed on paid administrative leave Wednesday night by the school board because of a personnel matter that won't be discussed.

Holding signs that said things such as "We want answers," "We will be heard" and "We have a voice, too," students took to the halls of the school Friday before classes.

This is the second time a superintendent has been put on paid leave in a year. In February, the superintendent of the Oppenheim Ephratah School District was put on leave for a personnel matter.

The district is also under investigation by the state for grading and promotion practices, although the district says that is not related to Lawrence's leave.
