Officer injured in car accident while pursuing alleged shoplifter

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Utica Police Officer and a Utica resident were both hospitalized Tuesday after the officer's patrol car collided with the other motorist.

Officer Kevin Logalbo was pursuing a shoplifter who was on the run when he struck a car driven by Jerry Beckwith Jr., 23, Utica. Both Logalbo and Beckwith were taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries.

Beckwith was found to be in possession of marijuana and was ticketed for it. He was also issued tickets for suspended vehicle registration, and no insurance.

The alleged shoplifter was caught near the scene of the accident. Orenzo Harrell, 44, Utica is accused of shoplifting from the Price Chopper on Genesee Street. He's been charged with petit larceny.

The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
