Official: EEE spraying at Sylvan Beach won't deter tourism

SYLVAN BEACH, N.Y. (WKTV) - A horse in Oswego County died last week from the EEE virus, and since then, the county has sprayed pesticide for mosquitoes in Western Oneida County near the Oswego County border.

Sylvan Beach Administrator Joseph Benedict doesn't expect any mosquito or spraying concerns to keep visitors from the resort village this holiday weekend.

EEE or no EEE, Sylvan Beach sprays for mosquitoes around six times a year anyway, and the Benedict says good luck finding one of the insects there.

"I suspect the problem's a little to the east and north of us right now," Benedict said. "It's great that the county came and gave us an extra spray, though it can't hurt. We don't allow mosquitoes at Sylvan Beach, though. Can't have it."

Benedict says they've been having record crowds at Sylvan Beach this Summer and he isn't expecting any different for the upcoming holiday weekend.
