Officials already looking ahead to 35th Boilermaker

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - There is no rest for Boilermaker officials. Just one day after Boilermaker Sunday, Executive Director Tim Reed is already laying out plans for the 35th anniversary event.

There's no denying Boilermaker 2011 was a winner, but with the all important 35th Anniversary race just 362 days away, race officials are going through the details of the event with a fine-toothed comb.

"When you have a situation where you have a limited product and a large demand, there is a possibility of switching bibs, trying to sell bibs, and that's one of the things that we are going to research a little bit more," says Reed.

Boilermaker 2012 will have a cap, but whether that cap is more or less than 2011 has yet to be decided. Next year, Reed says he'd love to have the past 34 winners of the Boilermaker come back for the race, but he is working against time to try and achieve that goal.

The 2012 Boilermaker logo, marking the 35th anniversary, will not be revealed until January's registration weekend. However, some of this year's changes at the starting line are here to stay, like the 5K start time that has moved from 7:30 am. to 7:15 am. The move gave the flow of the race an extra fifteen minutes to space out runners.

As for other ways to celebrate the longevity of the hometown race that is talked about all year long, we're told we'll just have to wait.

"I've got a couple of other things planned, but you can't unwrap all your presents today," says Reed.
