Ogdensburg journalist retires after 50-year career
OGDENSBURG, N.Y. (AP) - A northern New York journalist is
winding down a career of over 50 years at the newspaper he joined as a part-time sports writer in high school. Chuck Kelly is retiring Friday from the Journal in Ogdensburg, a small St. Lawrence River port city that's home to the Frederic Remington Art Museum. His title is publisher and editor of the Johnson Newspaper Corp.'s St. Lawrence County Newspapers. But Kelly is best known for his long association with the Ogdensburg paper, which he led through tough economic times and a succession of owners. He boosted his community in print and relationships with government leaders and pushed a Democratic party agenda in a heavily Republican part of the state. He'll continue writing the Journal's "Kelly's Comments" column and "Glance at the Past" in the Advance News, the paper's Sunday edition. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press.
