(WKTV) - Oneida County is home to a lot of sports champions, and quite a few of those athletes were honored Wednesday, starting with Remsen native and Olympic Bronze medalist Erin Hamlin.
Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente made an official proclamation stating Feb. 11 as Erin Hamlin Day in Oneida County. That was the day she went down in Olympic history, becoming the first American to medal in singles luge. Picente also renamed the popular youth summer program in her honor.
"It's great to be recognized for achievements, especially athletic ones," Hamlin said. "It's such a positive thing to talk about and be able to recognize in the area, and have other sports teams too, from New York Mills and Notre Dame -- it's awesome."
The New York Mills boys basketball team was also honored today for winning their second state title in four years after beating Coleman Catholic in overtime, as was the Notre Dame girls basketball team for winning the Class B state title this year after beating Bishop Kearny.
