Oneida County to use medical examiner instead of elected coroners
ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - After much discussion and debate, Oneida County will be moving from its current coroner system, to a medical examiner.
The County Board of Legislators voted on the move Wednesday afternoon.
Currently, there are four elected coroners in Oneida County, but the new system would eliminate those positions and move to a medical examiner (a medical doctor) contracted through the county.
Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente says that it's a more efficient way to handle reported deaths in the county.
"It's really an elimination of one layer of government and putting in place a professional pathologist that will have the ultimate say in the process at the time of death," Picente said.
The current coroner system will remain in place until the end of 2012 and a medical examiner system will take over beginning in the start of January 2013.
