Oneida County unveils first Purple Heart County sign

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Oneida County is designated a Purple Heart County, and now there's a sign to let everyone who gets off the Thruway in Utica know.

It's located at the Oneida County Welcome Center at Exit 31 and look closely. With Oneida County highlighted on the map, it resembles the shape of a heart.

With Memorial Day weekend almost here, the sign shows people that Oneida County honors the sacrifices of men and women who were hurt or died for the United States.

"Freedom is not free, it comes at a price," said Joe Fraccola, senior vice commander. "And the veterans that served the county, died for the country, are the ones that gave them that."

The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the armed forces who has been wounded or killed.

Thirty-four other signs will soon be in place throughout the county.
