(WKTV) - An Oneida woman whose car crashed in the Erie Canal near the Town Sullivan in Madison County has died, according to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

Colleen Hyland, 48, of Oneida, was a social studies teacher at Chittenango Middle School and was on her way to work Wednesday when the accident happened around 6:30 a.m.

According to the Madsion County Sheriff's Office, Hyland saw an accident in front of her that had just happened on Harsh Road and tried to get around the car in the roadway. Hyland then lost control of her 2008 Toyota RAV 4, hit the disabled car and the Erie Canal's cement bridge abutment broadside. The impact caused her car to overturn and land on its roof in the water.

Grief counselors are available at the middle school where Hyland was a teacher. A vigil is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Crossroads Community Church in Chittenango.
