Opening day at the Woods Valley set for Christmas Eve

WESTERNVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Saturday's snow is a welcome sign for Woods Valley Ski Area owner Tim Woods.

Woods says although we are seeing the first significant snowfall of the season, it will take a couple more days to create a big enough base in order to open the ski area in Westernville in western Oneida County.

He says the snow making machines are on, and they will continue to add to the natural snow that is falling. He said, "We are excited, and we're going to add to what Mother Nature is giving us right now, and when those guns are fired up, I'm fired up."

Woods says other ski areas like McCauley Mountain in Old Forge have already opened. He said, "A little further to the north, they've had some temperature advantages over the last few weeks and they've capitalized on them, so some of the bigger mountains up north have been open, and certainly through New England they're open and expanding terrain as we speak."

Last year, Woods Valley opened on December 21st, this year it will be December 24th, and Woods says they are two relatively late openings because usually the slopes have opened in the past usually around December 10th.

Woods Valley will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, closed for Christmas Day, then open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. right through January 2nd in order to capitalize on the business during Christmas week.

Woods say this is a huge week for ski resorts all across the country.
