Woman in critical condition after passers-by pull her from fiery car

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Some good Samaritans came to one woman's rescue Thursday morning after an accident on the North-South arterial in Utica left her car in flames.

Utica Police say Frances Murawski, 83, was driving northbound on the arterial around 9:30 a.m. Thursday and was just before Court Street when she lost control of the car and struck a power pole, causing her car to go off the road, and catch fire.

Murawski was still inside the vehicle as it went up in flames, but with the assistance of some passers-by, she was helped out of the vehicle and brought to safety.

Utica Police then arrived on the scene and extinguished the flames.

Murawski was rushed to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica where she was listed in critical condition as of Thursday evening.

It wasn't easy for police officers responding to get to the burning vehicle. In fact, a Utica patrol car responding to the scene on the arterial was crossing Oswego Street and was struck by another car. Luckily, no one was injured in that accident.
