Pet lovers honor their deceased furry friends

By ALLISON NORLIAN

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Lights of Love Memory Tree Ceremony, celebrating and honoring the bonds between pet owners and their deceased pets, was held Thursday night at the New Hartford Animal Hospital.

Local pet lovers created ornaments to hang on the veterinarian office's front lobby tree, with special wishes and characteristics about their pets. Some added a photo of their pets to the ornament, others brought their pets favorite toy or bed to donate in their memory.

The vets grief counselor said participating in activities like this one is important for pet lovers, "Pet loss is a disenfranchised grief. It's not readily accepted by people who aren't animal lovers its important they recognized they aren't alone, the grief they are suffering is real and we can offer support for them."

Refreshments were served at the ceremony.
