Plans already underway for 36th Boilermaker

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - While next year's Boilermaker Road Race is more than a year away, race officials have already begun to discuss ways to improve the race in 2013.

There were some major changes to this year's event, most notable the move of the Health and Fitness Expo from the Masonic Care Community to Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica.

Organizers said that they felt the new indoor location was a success and helped volunteers and participants stay cool as temperatures soared. However, there were a few logistical issues.

"I think we had a problem with traffic control right during the start of it," said Jim Stasaitis, race director. "No one thought about the traffic on the Parkway and Sherman and the left arrow only allowing three cars at a time."

There were also some kinks with the bib transfer process. All in all, though, organizers say the 35th Boilermaker Road Race was one of the best in the race's history, with no major glitches to report.

In terms of the number of runners for the 2013 race, organizers will be reviewing data and setting a cap sometime in fall 2012.
