Police: Speed, snowy conditions lead to car colliding with bus in New Hartford
NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Authorities say speed and snowy conditions are to blame for an accident involving a car and a school bus on Friday morning in New Hartford.
Police say that shortly before 8 a.m.., Michael Vargas, 28, of Burlington Flats exited State Route 8 North towards Kellogg Road and because of his speed, combined with snowy conditions, his vehicle slid down the State Route 8 off ramp and into Kellogg Road.
According to police, the front of Vargas's vehicle collided into the passenger side of a New Hartford school bus, which was only occupied by the driver, Joseph Gillen, 43 of Frankfort.
Gillen was treated at the scene by members of the Willowvale Fire Department and Edwards Ambulance personnel for arm pain.
Vargas's vehicle sustained heavy front end damage and his air bags deployed because of the crash.
Vargas was issued traffic tickets for speed not reasonable and failing to stop for the stop sign. He is scheduled to appear at the Town of New Hartford Court at a later date.
