Police: Verona man drove drunk, fled accident scene

VERONA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Verona man is facing DWI charges, according to New York State Police, after he drove drunk, caused an accident, and then fled the scene on the Thruway.

Authorities say 25-year-old Steven Merriff, of Verona, was driving at a high rate of speed on Eastwood Drive, slid out of control and hit a utility pole near the intersection of Greenwood Street.

Police responded to the accident scene and the car was nowhere to be found. Witnesses told police the make of the car and that they observed the car getting on the Thruway in Verona.

Thruway-assigned state police found the damaged car in a parking lot near the Canastota Thruway exit, NYSP said.

Police say Merritt was under the influence of alcohol and was arrested for DWI with a blood alcohol content of .13%.

Merritt was ticketed for DWI, driving with a BAC of .08% or greater, unsafe speed, no seat belt, failure to keep right, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and a cell phone violation.
