Police: Woman attempts to rob check cashing store Wednesday

(WKTV) - A woman brandished a gun and attempted to rob a checking cashing store Wednesday around 8 a.m. before the alarm scared her away, Utica Police said.

According to officials, a woman was waiting outside Universal Check Cashing at 252 Genesee St. Wednesday morning before the store opened. As the employee was unlocking the door and explained the store wasn't open, the woman pushed her way inside and displayed a gun. The woman asked for money, but fled on foot northbound on Genesee when the store's alarm sounded.

The suspect is described as a black woman who is medium build and about 5-foot-10-inches tall. She had reddish-brown hair, which officials say could be a wig. She was wearing dark clothing and bright lipstick and was wearing large glasses that covered her face.
