(WKTV) - The Police and Fire Retirees of Upstate want the family members of colleagues they've lost to know that their loved ones are never forgotten.

The group had a special recognition ceremony Friday at the Parkway Rec Center in Utica. They gave flowers to surviving family members of firefighters and police officers who died in the past year.

"I fought fires with them," said Chief Russell Brooks of the Utica Fire Departments. "I was on the fire ground and they all displayed great courage and knowledge. And as I said, I not only learned lessons in firefighting from them, but I learned lessons in life from them."

"Taps" was also played, and local elected leaders spoke.

Those honored this year were, from the Utica Police Department: Plt. Jesse Nicotera, Plt. Edward Morehead and Det. Joseph Romanelli. Fire department members honored were DC Walt Meyers, FM Richard Tomaino, FM Alton France and FM Leon Stolarczyk.
