ILION, N.Y. - A teenager was issued an appearance ticket after authorities found drug paraphernalia and a knife in his locker at Ilion Junior-Senior High School on Tuesday.

Around 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, the Village of Ilion Police Department along with three New York State Police Troopers (K-9 Handlers) along with their dogs, conducted a narcotics sweep of the lockers at the Ilion-Junior-Senior High School.

Principal Renee Rudd assisted both law enforcement agencies in scheduling and coordinating the detail. The students were placed in a "lock-down" status and they continued working in their classrooms or were on their lunch break, while the narcotics sweep detail was conducted.

As a result of the narcotics sweep, the NYSP K-9 units detected the presence of illegal narcotics inside a student locker. A subsequent search confirmed the presence of a marijuana smoking device which had residue present in it, drug paraphernalia and a knife.

A 15 year old male student was later issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Herkimer County Probation Department, and released into the custody of his mother.

Police said this is the second such narcotics sweep conducted at the Ilion Junior-Senior High School during the 2011-2012 school year. The administration at the school worked closely and cooperatively with law enforcement, police said, adding that previous narcotics sweeps at the school have not resulted in the detection of illegal narcotics within the building.
