Grant resurrection allows Utica Police to maintain officer positions
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Utica Police had thought they lost a $700,000 federal grant earlier this year when a tough budget forced the city to cut seven officers.
However, Mayor David Roefaro announced Wednesday that the city was able to resurrect the grant and avoid cutting another four officers. The city's Public Safety Commissioner Daniel LaBella said the grant will help officers target those smaller crimes that have a big impact on people's lives.
"A lot of the quality of life crimes...we sometimes don't have the manpower," LaBella said. "This money will enable us to attack the community policing crimes - loud music, disorderly gangs, garbage in front of the house, and those kinds of crimes."
The grant pays the salary of those four officers for three years, with the understanding that the city takes up the cost in the fourth year.
