String of painted black dots leave police wanting answers

By Joleen Ferris

(WKTV) - Someone is spray-painting black dots on structures throughout West Utica.

Brodock Press...L.J.'s Sports Bar....Kennedy Plaza Apartments and various homes, utility poles and outbuildings in the area.  Some vertical, some horizontal, but always a single line of black dots.

"I guess we'll find out if we see more people coming forward, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it," says Sgt. Steve Hauck of UPD.

Surveillance video at Kennedy Plaza captures the man stumbling toward exterior structures at the apartment complex, deliberately spray painting rows of dots on them. The video was recorded just after 1a.m. Jan. 14.  In some areas, the man appears to have painted on virtually everything he walked by.  Graffiti has become such a costly and widespread problem in Utica, UPD has an investigator dedicated solely to looking into it.

"I know some people like to think of graffiti people as artists. They're vandals is what they are. These aren't people painting murals. These are people damaging other people's property," says Hauck.

If you recognize the person in the video or have seen similar graffiti, Utica Police as you to contact them at 223 3561. Calls can be kept confidential.
