Polish-American Heritage Month kicks off with flag-raising in Utica

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - October 1 marks the beginning of Polish-American Heritage Month and the City of Utica marked the occasion with a special flag raising ceremony on Friday at City Hall.

Throughout the month of October, the Polish culture, history and traditions will be highlighted, a national effort that has gone on for 31 years.

No matter your nationality, though, the hope is that you take pride in your background.

"We treasure, along with our American heritage, we treasure our Polish heritage, the two combined together, as we would say, two beautiful pieces of glass in a cultural mosaic," said Father John Mikalajunas of Holy Trinity Church in Utica. "We each have our distinctiveness and our unity."

Father Mikalajunas says it is important that the heritage be passed on from generation to generation.

The 11:30 mass on Sunday at Holy Trinity Church is said entirely in Polish.
