Portrait of Francis Bellamy unveiled at Rome City Hall

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - The man who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance will be forever recognized at City Hall in Rome.

The National Bellamy Award Organization presented a portrait of Francis Bellamy to Rome Mayor Joe Fusco on Wednesday morning.

The director of the organization says it's important to continue telling the story of  Bellamy and the meaning of patriotism.

"It's not just about being patriotic and raising the flag," said Frank Beradino, director of the National Bellamy Award Organization. "Patriotism means community service and responsibility. It means voting -- all the things we need to do as a society in our great country."

Beradino says it's important to not forget the ideals on which the country was founded.
