Postal Officials confirm Utica Distribution Center closing in 2012

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Workers at the Utica Postal Distribution Center received bad news on Thursday - in spite of a large grass roots effort to save it, the center will be closing next year.

While there's no firm date for the closure, officials are currently just saying that the Utica Postal Distribution Center will close some time in 2012.

It's also not yet clear how many of the roughly 32 people who work there will be affected - how many will have the opportunity to transfer and how many will lose their jobs.

This move is expected to save around $2.2 million a year for the postal service and a spokesperson says the average customer will see no difference in their service.

That spokesperson claimed that overnight delivery for local mail, local being zip codes that start with 133, 134 and 135, will not change.

Some things that the postal service says will change are things such as overnight delivery from those local zips to Albany.

Officials say if the physical Utica postmark on your piece of mail has meaning for you, you can bring your mail up to the window clerk at the post office and they can give it that Utica postmark.
