Proctor NJROTC students get a taste of military life

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Ninth grade students from Proctor High School gathered at Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES in New Hartford on Saturday, where they received quite an earful from a U.S. Marine Corps Drill Instructor.

The 64 students are all cadets in the Junior ROTC program at Proctor.

Organizers say the day started at 5 a.m. on Saturday and went straight through 8 p.m.

"It's a big process. It's a big program," said Master Chief Mark Williamson, Naval Science Director at Proctor. "They got haircuts, they're doing everything military style. I've got marine corps drill instructors here today to give them a little taste of military life at the same time teaching them military leadership as well."

Clifford C. Crandall with the American Martial Arts Institute was also on hand to teach the cadets some basic personal safety lessons, which he says gives them a lot more self confidence.
