Prom safety alert: Distracted driving can be deadly

By WKTV News

ILION, N.Y.(WKTV) - Distracted driving has replaced drunk driving as the number one killer of teens according research by the Children's Hospital of Philadephia.

That's why the local State Farm Insurance Agency in Ilion hosted a distracted driving simulation.

Students at Ilion High School got a first-hand peek, just in time for prom and graduation season, at what can happen when they're not focused 100 percent on the road.

The messages from police and school administrators has always been, "Don't drink and drive," and "Don't speed."
Now their adding to that. They're urging teens to refrain from texting and using their phones while driving.

The message hit home for the teens.

Senior, Sean O'Brien said, "I've never tried to text or call while driving or anything like that and this just showed me that I should never try."
