Puppies, mother left outside door of closed humane society

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Nine German Shepherd mix puppies and their mother were dropped at the door of the Stevens-Swan Humane Society on Sunday night in the rain and cold.

It is considered abandoning an animal because the shelter was closed at the time. The older dog got the attention of a driver on Route 12. She stopped and discovered the puppies in a green Rubbermaid tote with Chinese food left in the box.

The puppies are going through a health check right now and the staff is reviewing security footage.

"No matter where you dump an animal, it is still considered abandonment," said John Treen, shelter manager at Stevens-Swan.

"We're not open. That is still abandonment," he said. "You left animals out in the freezing rain without proper food and shelter. That is still considered abandonment."

There is a sign on the building reminding people that it is illegal to dump animals. The penalty is a up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
