Rally against SAFE Act held at Ft. Stanwix
ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - The SAFE Act was protested Sunday at Fort Stanwix in Rome. A group of local citizens called "New York Revolution" organized a rally and those in attendance want to overturn the new legislation.
The are many parts to the SAFE Act, including a ban on certain guns that are now classified as assault weapons.
People at the rally, including coordinator George Curbelo, say this is a violation of their freedoms given to them by the Second Amendment right to bear arms. Curbelo said, "It's a common belief among us Second Amendment advocates that if we lose our Second Amendment, then all of our other amendments become compromised so we protect all of our civil liberties by protecting the Second Amendment."
Several rallies are planned throughout New York State over the summer.
Governor Andrew Cuomo swiftly passed the SAFE Act as the nation's first state-based response to the shooting spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
