Residents evacuate after gas leak in Village of Ilion

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - A reported gas leak in the Village of Ilion on Thursday had several residents leaving their homes.

There were also reports that traffic going into the village was stopped while crews fixed the problem. It happened on East Main Street around 10 a.m. Thursday.

One resident says village workers were doing a repair on the water main when a gas line was accidentally hit. National Grid was immediately called to the scene.

The resident says he smelled gas in his house and got outside.

"I got my daughter ready, and I came out and looked," said Justin Benn. "You could see the gas coming out of the ground. It looked like water -- like mist coming out

Calls to the village to confirm the problem has been fixed have not yet been returned.
