Residents meet candidates for merged Ilion-Mohawk Board of Ed

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Ilion-Mohawk Central School District held a "Meet the Candidates" forum at Herkimer County Community College Thursday night. 21 candidates are running for the merged district's new Board of Education. Residents will vote on 7 of the candidates Wednesday March 27th.

Over 200 people filled one of the auditoriums at HCCC eager to learn more about who could be making the decisions in the new merged Ilion-Mohawk Central School District.

As the Board of Education candidates each took the stand, residents were all ears. Many thought that experienced board members would benefit the newly merged district but that fresh ideas could be good too.

"I think we need new blood, I think we need new and fresh ideas absolutely," said Terri Sterling, a Mohawk resident who attended the meeting. "And some of the decisions that the past boards have made maybe put us in the positions we're in and maybe having new people to bring new ideas would be a great thing."

The vote is next Wednesday, March 27th for Ilion and Mohawk residents.

7 candidates will be chosen to be on the new board, serving different terms. Three board members will serve for three year terms, 2 members will serve for two year terms, and two members will serve a one year term. The candidates receiving the greatest number of votes will serve the longest terms.
