Rock and Gem Camp awards ceremony highlights science

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - A group of young scientists were recognized for their accomplishments, during an award ceremony for the Rock and Gem Camp at the Herkimer Diamond Mines & KOA Resort, Thursday night.

"Tonight is a reflection of their talents their accomplishments in front of parents and siblings," said Renee Scialdo Shevat president and owner. "We've got about 400 people here this evening most of whom are family and the children are excited to do this little show and tell with them right in the background."

The camp is in its 21st year of operation. This year it hosted 100 campers from around the region and beyond.

Also, the camp is located parallel to the West Canada Creek, giving campers the opportunity to have an interactive experience with scientific topics such as geology, mining, solar energy and energy conversion.

"It's not just the whole fun of the camp, I learn so much while I'm here every year," said Madeline Peyton of Herkimer.
