Rome Police arrest suspect in South Carolina murder

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - A murder suspected wanted by South Carolina authorities has been arrested the Rome Police Department, but so far there are no connections to Rome's two homicides in March.

The suspect, identified as 24 year-old South Carolina resident John Christopher Hart, was transported to Rome Police Headquarters and is currently being held as a fugitive form justice pending extradition proceedings.

Rome Police were contacted Wednesday by members of the Lexington County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Department regarding the murder of a woman there.

Further information was relayed that the murder suspect may have ties to the Rome area.

Police set up surveillance at a house in the 400 block of Williams Street Thursday. At about 2:30 pm, Hart was seen walking from the that residence.

He was taken into custody in the 400 block of West Thomas Street.

The South Carolina murder involved the shooting death of an adult female.

Hart’s ties to the Rome area as well his activities since arriving are still being investigated.
