Rome dialysis center expands

By WKTV News

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - The dialysis facility in Rome celebrates an expansion. The center, on Perimeter Road, is part of Faxton St. Luke's Hospital. In the past, it has only been able to accommodate 30 patients-- but now, that number has more than doubled.

Patients needing dialysis must receive the life sustaining treatments several times a week. There was a waiting list 20 people long, all of whom had to travel out of town for their treatments. "Prior to this, anyone outside those 30 patients did not have a place to go, " said Kelly Knoeller, Administrator of the Renal Program for Faxton St. Luke's. "Which meant that they live in Rome and they might've been traveling to Herkimer and Oneida or Utica to receive dialysis."

The clinic went from 8 units to 16 units. Now it can take as many as 64 patients. The center also accepts patients who are visiting the area and need to keep up with treatments. There are still ten spots available at the Rome location.
